Nikolai ist der First Round Pick der Toronto Maple Leafs aus dem Jahre 1998 (10th Overall). Durch Kraftraining und viel Gewichtzunahme zu seiner NHL Traumgrösse von 6'6'' schaffte er den Durchbruch auf Anhieb und scorte in seiner Rookie Saison gleich 30 Scorer Punkte. In der Saison 2002/2003 hat er den Durchbruch endgültig. In 72 Spielen punktete er 45 Punkte. Auf diese Saison hin wurde er zum Linken Flügel umfunktioniert um in der ersten Linie der Maple Leafs zu stürmen.
